Old Uncle Abraham has had an artificial leg since he was a little child. He tells his nieces in a nostalgic, melancholy tone that he is reported to have had a romance when he was young, and they are fascinated to hear this. Uncle Abraham's tale, which served as inspiration for the Vanishing Hitchhiker ghost story, takes place while the character is in his early teens, disabled, alone, and seeking solace in the graveyard's displays of suffering and death. He meets a young woman there who appears to get him. Things are looking bright for Abraham as they start to fall in love, but when his girlfriend asks him to meet her in the cemetery on a specific night, things take a turn for the worse.
